John Carrafiell

Founder and Partner

John Carrafiell is a Founder and Partner of GreenOak. John is responsible for GreenOak's European business. Prior to GreenOak, Mr. Carrafiell was the Founder and Managing Partner at Alpha Real Estate Advisors from 2009 to 2010. Mr. Carrafiell was previously Global Co-Head of Morgan Stanley Real Estate Investing (MSREI) from 2005-2007 and a member of the Global Investment Banking Division's six-person Operating Committee. He joined Morgan Stanley in 1987, moved to London in 1989 to open MSREI in Europe, where he became the Head of Europe in 1995 and a Managing Director in 1999. From December 2008 to December 2009, he was a Senior Advisor of Morgan Stanley. Mr. Carrafiell was Chairman of the Audit Committee and a director of the Canary Wharf Group Plc from 2004-2009 and a director of several other leading European real estate companies in Holland, Spain, Germany, France and the U.K. Mr. Carrafiell is a Sterling Fellow of, and graduated with a BA from, Yale University in 1987. He is a member of the Supervisory Board of Corio, a leading €8 billion listed retail real estate company, a former Trustee of ULI, a director of the Executive Board of the European Public Real Estate Association, a member of Dean's Council of the Yale School of Architecture and the Tate Modern Acquisitions Committee. Mr. Carrafiell is based in GreenOak's London office.

Sonny Kalsi

Founder and Partner

Sonny Kalsi is a Founder and Partner of GreenOak. Mr. Kalsi is responsible for GreenOak's U.S. business. Mr. Kalsi was previously the Global Co-Head of Morgan Stanley Real Estate Investing (MSREI) and President of the Morgan Stanley Real Estate Funds (MSREF) until his departure in 2009. Prior to managing MSREI globally, Mr. Kalsi was based in Asia where, beginning in late 1997 and through his tenure into 2006, Mr. Kalsi and his team led the formation of Morgan Stanley's property business in Asia and built a leading real estate platform in the region. Mr. Kalsi also has lived and worked in Los Angeles, London and Sydney/Melbourne. Mr. Kalsi has served on the boards of a number of the MSREI portfolio companies and has been cited in several publications for his profile in the real estate industry, including Private Equity Real Estate magazine as one of the "30 Most Influential" people in private equity real estate globally. Mr. Kalsi is a graduate of Georgetown University with a degree in Business Administration and is a member of the Board of Regents of Georgetown University. He is a Trustee of the Asia Society, Trustee of the Spence School, Board member of the Jorge Posada Foundation and a member of the Young Presidents Organization. Mr. Kalsi is also an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University in the Masters of Real Estate Program. Mr. Kalsi is based in GreenOak's New York office.

Fred Schmidt

Fred Schmidt is a Founder and Partner of GreenOak. Mr. Schmidt oversees GreenOak's business in Japan. Mr. Schmidt was previously the President and CEO of Morgan Stanley Capital Japan and Head of Asia Investing for the Morgan Stanley Real Estate Funds (MSREF). Mr. Schmidt began his career in real estate at KPMG in Los Angeles in the international tax department where he assisted Japanese real estate clients with tax structuring and planning. In 1990, Mr. Schmidt moved to KPMG's Honolulu office to assist Japanese clients with commercial real estate acquisitions in Hawaii. From 1991 to 1993 he returned to California to conduct fieldwork and portfolio valuations for non-performing loan portfolios for the RTC and financial institutions. From 1994 to 1995 Mr. Schmidt was based in Hawaii and conducted loan workout, asset repositioning and asset disposition work for Japanese banks and property companies. In early 1995, Mr. Schmidt was hired by Kroll Associates to head their Japan office. Mr. Schmidt worked on various assignments in Japan, China and Southeast Asia serving the US and Japanese governments and multinationals. Mr. Schmidt joined Morgan Stanley in early 1998 to start up a loan special servicing business in Japan. He became the Head of the Asia Investing business for Morgan Stanley in 2008. Mr. Schmidt served as the Vice Chairman for the Urban Land Institute in Japan. He is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara with a degree in business administration and economics. Mr. Schmidt is based in GreenOak's Tokyo office.
